What the scheme actually changes on a household bill

PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana is a central rooftop-solar programme. It is not a DISCOM tariff change and it does not rewrite the APERC slab table used by this calculator. What it can change is how many units you buy from the grid. Electricity you generate and use yourself is electricity that never appears as billed units.

The public description of the scheme includes a goal of up to 300 units of free electricity a month for covered households, with subsidy support for residential rooftop systems applied through the official national portal. Eligibility, capacity, vendor empanelment and metering (net or gross) are decided on that portal and by your DISCOM — not by this website.

Rooftop solar also sits under the APERC other-charges schedule. The FY 2026-27 schedule used here lists a grid support charge for rooftop solar consumers. That line will not appear in a simple units-and-load estimate, which is one reason a solar household’s official bill can still differ from the calculator even when energy charges fall.

How to use this site if you are considering solar

First estimate your current LT bill from a recent month of units and sanctioned load. That gives you a baseline. Then look at which domestic slab your units currently reach: a saved grid unit is worth your marginal slab rate, not the average rate on the bill. Households already in the upper domestic bands see a much larger rupee effect from each displaced unit than households sitting in the first two slabs.

Use the official portal for applications. Treat any installer who asks you to pay through this website as a warning sign — we never collect money.

Where to apply (and what we do not handle)

  1. Open the official portal at pmsuryaghar.gov.in and use an empanelled vendor. Approval, metering and inspection run through your DISCOM.
  2. Size the system against your own consumption pattern, not only against roof area.
  3. Keep using official DISCOM channels for the electricity bill itself. Solar does not move your account onto this site.
